PLAINFIELD, NJ — On the last Friday in March, Barack Obama Green Charter Schools hosted a unique field trip to Bowlero, where students fused academics and wellness through real-world math challenges and social-emotional learning.
The event was part of a broader mission to support both academic excellence and the mental well-being of students during what is often referred to as “Marathon March.” Students in grades 6–12 enjoyed a day of bowling while engaging in math-integrated assignments that reinforced key concepts such as ratios, percentages, data analysis, and problem-solving.
"This was more than just a fun trip—it was an opportunity for our scholars to connect classroom learning with real-life application," said Erin Murphy-Richardson, Superintendent of the Barack Obama Green Charter Schools. "They demonstrated collaboration, resilience, and critical thinking, all while taking part in a restorative experience that supported their social-emotional health."
The Barack Obama Green Charter Schools thanked the Superintendent of the Plainfield Public Schools, Rashon Hasan, for his assistance in facilitating the trip. Through a shared services initiative between the two districts, students were transported at a significantly reduced cost.
“We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Hasan and the Plainfield Public Schools team,” said Murphy-Richardson. “His leadership and partnership allowed us both to allocate funding toward furthering educational programming for our students. This is a shining example of how shared services can strengthen our school communities.”
“We believe in lifting each other up, and this partnership was a powerful reminder of what can happen when we put students first,” said Superintendent Rashon Hasan. “By working together across districts, we created a moment of joy, learning, and wellness for our young people—an investment that extends far beyond one day at the bowling alley."
Hasan said that in the coming weeks, Plainfield Public School District students will have the same opportunity to engage in such an immersive experience.
